Shawl Weaving Artisan - Winding and Warping

Introduction of winding and warping machine

Objectives: At the end of this lesson you shall be able to
            • explain winding
            • list types of winding
            • brief types of winding machines
            • explain warping
            • brief types of warping
            • list parts of warping machines.

1 Winding: Winding is to convert yarn from bulk form Spindle Yarn wound by rotating spindle. Used for
(like hank, skein, or bobbin) into a suitable package Winding pirns.

weaving, or dyeing. (Fig 1) Automatic Has sensors, automatic knotters, and

1 Yarn comes from supply cone or hank.
2 Passes through tensioner and yarn clearer.
3 Travels over guide and onto rotating drum.
4 Drum rotates and moves guide left-right (traverse).

5 Yarn winds uniformly onto the cone.
Functions of winding 6 Machine stops automatically when cone is full or yarn
                                                                    breaks.
1 Create yarn packages that are easy to handle.
                                                                  2 Warping
2 Remove yarn faults (knots, slubs).
Warping means arranging multiple yarns parallel to each
3 Add uniform tension to yarn. other, wound with equal length and tension, ready for

Types of winding Main types of warping

a Precise winding a Direct warping (beam warping)
               • Yarn winds in an exact pattern (cross or parallel). • Yarn from cones is wound directly onto warp beam.
               • Common in shuttle less loom pirns. • Used when colour pattern is simple or single
                                                                       colour.
               • Slower but neat and compact package.
                                                                    • Fast and efficient (Fig 2)
            b Random winding
               • Yarn winds freely in layers.
               • Faster winding.
               • Used for cones and general use.
            Types of packages
               • Cone: Used in weaving/knitting.

               • Pirn: Used in shuttle looms.
               • Bobbin: For spinning/weaving.
               • Cop: Small cylinder, often used in ring spinning.
            Main types of winding machines

Drum Yarn wound on a drum, which guides it
